The Center on Race and Social Problems announces its next speaker series lecture featuring Mark A. Nordenberg with Frederick W. Thieman and Edward P. Mulvey.

Chancellor Emeritus Nordenberg is Chair of the Institute of Politics. Frederick W. Thieman is a former US Attorney and Henry Buhl Chair for Civic Leadership at the Buhl Foundation. Edward P. Mulvey is a Professor of Psychiatry and Criminal Justice Coordinator.

In 2015, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald asked the Institute of Politics to assemble a group of distinguished civic leaders to examine what could be done to make our system “fairer and less costly, without compromising public safety.”

In response, the Institute convened the Criminal Justice Task Force, which included criminal justice professionals, distinguished academics and community leaders. The Task Force met over a one-year period, to read, discuss and explore solutions to the problems of mass incarceration. Ultimately, the final report focused on a manageable number of targeted opportunities for reform. This presentation will provide an overview of the problem, the process and the results and include time for audience Q & A.
