#CUETalks – Finding Reason for Hope: Race, Inequality, and Educational Change

This talk will explore educational inequality and trends related to inequality in U.S. society, focusing in particular on inequality in relation to race. Dr. Nasir will also explore both the ideology of structural racial inequality and the mechanisms of inequality in education and their connection to dehumanization as one of the goals and tools of racialization historically. Finally, this talk will offer reasons for hope for the future and the path by which we might create more equitable educational spaces.
Dr. Na’ilah Suad Nasir is the sixth President of the Spencer Foundation, which invests in education research that cultivates learning and transforms lives. She held a faculty appointment at the University of California, Berkeley from 2008-2019, where she also served as Vice Chancellor of Equity and Inclusion. Nasir earned her PhD in Educational Psychology at UCLA in 2000, and was a member of the faculty in the School of Education at Stanford University from 2000-2008. Her work focuses on issues of race, culture, learning, and identity. She is the author of Racialized Identities: Race and Achievement for African-American Youth and has published numerous scholarly articles. Nasir is a member of the National Academy of Education and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
