From Passion to Nonprofit: Tips for Creating a High-Functioning Nonprofit

If you’ve been thinking about turning your passion for a cause into a creating a nonprofit, this workshop will help you with strategies for avoiding pitfalls as you develop your plan.  In this highly interactive workshop, you will learn how to:

  • explore whether a 501(c)3 is the right model for you;
  • analyze the skill sets you must have to develop and lead a new organization;
  • effectively manage the relationship between an executive director and board of directors;
  • identify what makes your organization unique and why that’s important for funding strategies; and more!
  • This jam-packed workshop will facilitate bringing your passion to fruition.

The speakers for this workshop will be Sara Jane Lowry and Jessica Strong.

Sara Jane Lowry has worked in the nonprofit sector for 24 years in a variety of roles including Executive Director, CFO, Director of Development, and Grants Manager. She has been assisting Pennsylvania and Ohio nonprofits through her own consulting firm for the last seven years with a focus on board training, strategic planning, capital campaigns, project management, federal grant writing, and organizational development. She has helped small and large organizations with campaigns ranging from $500,000 to $20 million. Ms. Lowry is a past president of Grant Professionals Association – Western PA Chapter.

Jessica Strong, MSPPM, has worked with non-profits for over 10 years, helping them develop effective funding strategies and find financing through grants, trainings, conferences, and other special events. She serves as the vice-president of the Grant Professionals Association – Western PA chapter, and as treasurer of the Pennsylvania Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition. She is the founder of Whetstone Workgroup, a consulting firm and co-working space located in Sharpsburg.
