Men and Masculinities in the U.S. in the Age of #MeToo

April 9, 2019 @ 12:45 pm - 4:30 pm

Tue, April 9, 2019
12:45 PM – 4:30 PM EDT

Rodef Shalom Congregation
4905 Fifth Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15213

A presentation by Promundo, an international leader working to promote gender equality and create a world free from violence by engaging men and boys in partnership with women and girls.

For more than twenty years, Promundo has engaged in research, programs, and advocacy efforts demonstrating that exploring positive models of “what it means to be a man” and promoting healthy, respectful masculinity leads to improvements in the lives of women and girls, as well as in men’s own lives. Join us to hear the findings from ongoing and recent research and programming on how men think about their roles, and how this impacts violence and abuse towards women and girls. The workshop will also explore the ways in which social norms about masculinity are changing, how they are not, and what this means for gender-violence prevention efforts.

The #MeToo movement has sparked a cultural shift–nearly four in five men in southwest PA acknowledge that expectations for men’s behavior towards women have changed. Participants will discuss how to invite men to consider ways traditional male attitudes and behaviors can normalize gender-based violence and how both men and women can benefit from gender equity in relationships.
