Social and emotional development is difficult work but is inextricably linked to the success of young people. Students who have a sense of belonging and purpose, who can work well with their peers and who have the abilities to reliably meet commitments and fulfill obligations are far more likely to reach their full potential.
To advance a broader vision of youth success, the Aspen Institute recently launched the National Commission on Social, Emotional and Academic Development. Composed of leaders from education, science, government, and the private sector, this commission is engaging and energizing communities to fully integrate social, emotional and academic development in K-12 education so that all students are prepared to thrive in school, in our evolving 21st Century workplace and in life.
Karen Pittman proudly serves as a member of the National Commission, and in this conversation she will be speaking to members of the Aspen Youth Commission, who are providing critical input and perspective to the National Commission’s deliberations. The Youth Commissioners, all college students, will speak about their roles as youth representatives on the commission; their understanding of the importance of social, emotional and academic skills for youth success; and their thoughts on what K-12 schools can do to support skill development.
