Afterschool Webinar: Summer Learning Toolkit–A Deeper Dive: Keys to Staffing & Professional Development

March 28, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

This webinar is the second in a three-part series on the Summer Learning Toolkit, which is aligned with RAND Corporation’s report, “Getting to Work on Summer Learning, Second Edition.”

About this webinar: Summer learning programs offer invaluable spaces to engage youth in learning and development during the months when many students lose ground. High-quality summer programs keep kids safe and produce measurable benefits in math, reading, and social and emotional learning. However, planning for these programs can prove to be a challenge for even the most seasoned afterschool and summer program professionals.

Together with the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) and the National AfterSchool Association, the Afterschool Alliance is co-hosting this webinar as the second of a three-part series highlighting the Wallace Foundation’s new Summer Learning Toolkit—a great resource to use for whatever stage of planning you are at with your summer programming! We’ll be taking a closer look at staffing and professional development to examine how to hire and train the best possible staff that suits the specific climate, culture, and goals of your summer program.

Join us for a conversation with Pittsburgh Public Schools and Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time (APOST), one of the district-intermediary partnerships featured in the Summer Learning Project who participated in the study that informed the creation of the Toolkit. They will be sharing their firsthand experiences on the summer program hiring process and best practices to optimize professional development opportunities.

Speakers:

Kathryn Vargas, Director, Allegheny Partners for Out of School Time
Melanie Claxton, Coordinator, Out-of-School Time for Pittsburgh Public Schools
Hillary Oravec, Managing Partner, and Katie Willse, Senior Consultant, The Learning Agenda
Gina Warner, President, National AfterSchool Association
Nikki Yamashiro, Senior Director of Research, Afterschool Alliance
