ALCOSAN (W.A.V.E.) Hands on Workshop -For Teens

October 17, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

On Saturday, October 17, 2015, the ALCOSAN (W.A.V.E.) Afterschool Program will host its first Hands-on workshop for high school students.  The workshop will take place from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the ALCOSAN plant located at 3300 Preble Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15233. The focus of the workshop will be to have fun using measurements and predictions in the workplace.

Many students are interested in careers that involve skilled trades.  This workshop will integrate measuring, making predictions, hands-on learning, and opportunities to practice group process skills, which are skills that are valued in the work place.

Students will practice making predictions by guessing how many pieces of candy are in a jar, and measuring circumference using pumpkins and other items. They will also learn about tools used in the mechanical maintenance department at ALCOSAN and other industries that rely on measuring for accuracy. Who knew that math could be so fun?

If you could please share this invite with any high school students involved in each of your programs we would greatly appreciate it.  Space is limited so students are required to register to attend.

Please have any interested students contact Lisa George, Scholastic Outreach Coordinator at lisa.george@alcosan.org or call 412-734-6253 by Tuesday, October 13, 2015.  Please let Ms. George know at the time of RSVP if you will need assistance with transportation.  Light refreshments will be provided.
