How do we form strong family-school partnerships? Maria Searcy is a Parent Involvement in Education (PIE) consultant for the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  She provides technical trainings to districts across the state to increase parent involvement in schools. Enjoy a free lunch as we look at accessible resources about authentic parent engagement, and methods to help build parent leaders through parent-centered programs. Maria will also examine the importance of student voice and advocacy as it leads to courageous conversations, student organizing, and stronger parent-community-school unity.

Lunch will be served at noon, and Maria and her daughters will be raffling off a few resources to take home and share with your community. To get a jump-start, take a look at Dr. Karen Mapp’s “Dual Capacity Framework.”

Maria Searcy serves on the PA Title 1 State Parent Advisory Council, and is an active member of the Pittsburgh Public Schools Equity Advisory Panel, addressing the persistent achievement gap between African American and white students.  A native of Pittsburgh’s Northside, Maria leads the N-PAC (Northside Parent Action Council), a new grassroots community action group that is part of Pittsburgh Parent Power, funded by the Heinz Endowments and supported by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform.  In 2012, she received the Community Empowerment Award at the National Summit for Courageous Conversations, Pacific Educational Group.
