Program Description

Keep It Real (KIR) is a student-run volunteer organization at the University of Pittsburgh that provides personal in-home and after-school tutoring for the Somali-Bantu re-settled, refugee population in the city of Pittsburgh. The organization, founded in 2004, is comprised of nearly 100 student-tutors and serve approximately 35-40 families located in Lawrenceville, the Northside, Northview Heights, the Hill District, Sharpsburg, and the West End. KIR is affiliated with Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Somali-Bantu Community Association (SBCA) and the University of Pittsburgh. Our mission is to provide quality, personal tutoring to support the educational development and cultural adjustment of re-settled refugee kids and their families throughout the city of Pittsburgh
