Program Description
Points of Healthy Youth Sustainability, Education and Development (PHYSED) is an intensive intervention program for extremely high risk middle and high school (6th – 12th grade) students. The PHYSED program provides youth with ongoing, intensive, meaningful engagement with a positive adult mentor (an EECM staff member) who models appropriate and positive attitudes and behavior, helps the youth address personal issues and family crises, monitors the youth’s behavior, and recruits him/her to join and participate in a positive peer group versus continuing risky activities. The program provides opportunities for participants to work one-on-one with caring EECM staff. Each program participant also works in small groups with other students, following a curriculum that includes lessons to help prevent youth from making unhealthy choices. Individual mentoring, career exploration, field trips, and community service/volunteering are all part of PHYSED. These services equip youth to be more successful in the new Pittsburgh Public Schools environment.
