Empowered Educators Series: Part 5

How might we use the lenses of our individual lived experiences, our capacity for empathy and our understanding of institutions and the arts to talk openly about race?  In this five part series, educators from around the region join together to explore, reflect, and practice building spaces of racial justice and equity both in the classroom and community.

At this session: We close this academic year with our practice, and return to our central questions– to imagine a just world where inequities have been eradicated. How does that society operate? What are your personal experiences living in this world? We hope that by focusing on the practice, spending time in the galleries, and accepting nonclosure we open up the possibility to continue this work until we reconvene in the fall of 2019. (Newcomers are welcome!)

Through small group discussions, hands-on activities, and radical curating we will continue interrogating our minds, curriculum, institutions, systems – and we are bringing it all together to explore deeply our individual and collective understanding and comfort with how to imagine and build new worlds.

This is the fifth and final session of the 2018-19 Empowered Educators series.The second year of the series will continue in the fall. Please watch for email alerts of scheduled dates and registration. The Empowered Educators Series provides a forum for teachers, educators, administrators, counselors and the like to think critically and openly discuss topics of race, equity, bias, and pedagogy. Empowered Educators Series promotes ongoing learning, partnerships with supporting organizations, and community-building among teachers.

The Carnegie Museum of Art, Center for Urban Education, Western Pennsylvania Writing Project, The Learning Instigator and Remake Learning have joined together to support educators in their approaches and abilities to facilitate thoughtful discussions about race in the classroom.

We will start promptly at 5:05, please account for rush hour traffic in Oakland before you register.

This series is fully supported by The Grable Foundation and is free and open to the public, though registration is required. Dinner will be provided with a vegetarian option. Please help reduce food waste by letting us know if you need to cancel your registration.
