Nonprofit Resource Center: Budgeting 101 for Nonprofits

August 23, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Thursday, August 23, 2018 9:30 AM–12:30 PM  Squirrel Hill

Though often overlooked, a nonprofit’s budget is a guide that can help the organization plan for the future as well as assess its current financial health.  Analysis and careful planning can make a big impact on a nonprofit’s revenue stream.  Detailed budgeting can be intimidating, but it is the foundation of a successful development program and sustainable nonprofit organization.  It is also the main tool for an executive director to use to work with the board of directors, motivate employees, fulfill organization’s goals, and to be able to make strategic decisions if there is an event or crisis that deeply impacts revenue.

During this session, we will walk through setting up a detailed budget for both revenue and expenses with a focus on overall development efforts.  We will look at broader expenses such as staffing and innovative ways to decrease expenses without impacting services.  Please bring a copy of your budget and/or finances — not to share — but to be able to work through real numbers and concepts.

The strategies presented in this session will help nonprofits build a realistic budget that will serve as a strategic guide and foundation for the coming year.

The speaker will be Marcia Wallander, Director of Development at Adagio Health.  Marcia has more than twenty-five years of development experience at Carlow University, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Family House, Carnegie Mellon University and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.  She has extensive experience in creating and managing nonprofit budgets, writing and implementing strategic plans and conducting detailed analyses to successfully exceed short and long term goals. Marcia has managed budgets from $100,000 to budgets in excess of $2 million and believes that budgeting is the greatest tool for a development department and nonprofit organization.
